about proyecto sol
Proyecto SOL is an Earth Charter Indiana initiative that provides bilingual nature programming at three K-5 IPS schools. The goal is to engage students in eco-therapy -- the practice of using nature as a tool to improve mental health and overall well-being. Every fall, Proyecto SOL is offered as an after-school program, hosted at each school's local park. The target demographic of Proyecto SOL are students of Latine (or native Spanish-speaking background), but all students are welcome to join. Students can expect to spend intentional time outdoors, connect with nature, and learn about caring for our planet, bodies, and community.
STUDENT IMPACT
At the end of the 2024 season of Proyecto SOL, participating families were asked to complete a survey to better assess the impact of the program on the students. The findings below indicate the responses of 15 Proyecto SOL families:
93% of families strongly agreed that Proyecto SOL had a positive impact on their student(s)
100% of families strongly agreed that their student(s) looked forward to Proyecto SOL sessions
100% of families strongly agreed that Proyecto SOL helped their student(s) develop new skills or knowledge relating to the environment, nature, and caring for their community
ECO-THERAPY ACTIVITIES
Eco-therapy is a broad term that encompasses any intentional time spent outdoors and connecting with nature. Other words for eco-therapy include nature bathing, forest bathing, and nature connection. If you’re spending time outdoors, you’re experiencing eco-therapy! Example activities include biking, hiking, walking, playing soccer, gardening, picking up litter, and so much more. Proyecto SOL students also learn about native plants, yoga, mindfulness, artistic expression, and overall, how to have fun outside!
