People's Food Summit

The 2018 People’s Food Summit is about creating opportunities for residents and professionals to share knowledge and resources that lead to concrete actions on food- and agriculture-related issues in their neighborhoods and service areas. The event will accomplish this by facilitating links between “do-ers” to related local food and agriculture projects. The Food Summit will provide education, resources, and inspiration on food and agricultural issues through panel discussions, workshops, and interviews with stakeholders in the Indianapolis food system.

Among the numerous activities will be the welcome by State Representative Robin Shackleford, a keynote discussion with Karen Shore of Philadelphia’s Food Trust, a youth-led interactive workshop organized by the Felege Hiywot Center, and presentations by community leaders of across Indianapolis. In addition, there will be several informational booths at the event with resources on recycling, food safety, SNAP, WIC, breastfeeding, and Indy Food Council membership.

The event will be catered with fresh, healthy lunch options by We Run This, a Kheprw Institute program that helps reintegrate at-risk youths into their communities by teaching them entrepreneurial, culinary, and nutritional awareness and agency.

This year's food summit is a partnership between Indy Food Council, City of Indianapolis, Felege Hiywot Center, Indianapolis Neighborhood Resource Center, JumpIN for Healthy Kids, Kheprw Insitute, Marion County Public Health Department, Purdue Extension, YMCA of Greater Indianapolis, and Indianapolis residents.

City of Indianapolis Nature Challenge

The City Nature Challenge is an effort for cities to find and document as much urban nature as possible by challenging residents to become citizen scientists: Residents are asked to explore their area (backyard, playgrounds, parks, etc.) for plants and bugs/animals, document their findings (take a photo), and report them (via the iNaturalist website or app). The underlying objective of this event is to develop a new baseline of a city's biodiversity and to monitor how exactly change is accelerating.

The City Nature Challenge will be April 27-30, 2018 and will be undertaken in dozens of cities across the world this year, and Indianapolis will be one of those cities competing in this international event!

More details will be coming throughout the month, and you can find all of them on the page below!

Also, below is the link to our iNaturalist project!

10th Annual Greening the Statehouse

Join HEC as we celebrate a decade of hosting our annual forum, Greening the Statehouse! This year’s event will be held at the Hendricks County Fairgrounds Conference Center in Danville, Indiana.

Greening the Statehouse (GTS) is Indiana’s largest annual gathering of environmental-minded citizens! Your best opportunity to get up to speed on Indiana’s environment, to celebrate our movement’s successes, and to meet kindred spirits from across the state.

This year's keynote speaker, Mitch Hescox, will have a powerful story to share: While he spent his early years in the fossil fuel business, he has transformed into one of America's leading conservative advocates for climate action. As head of the Evangelical Environmental Network, he has spoken strongly in favor of renewable energy, clean air & clean water policies. We know his important message will inspire all of us to continue to build a broad-based movement for positive change in Indiana!
